Fujitsu Futro S540 - Thin Client

Overview

S540 together with the S740 are the successors of the previous S520 and S720 models.
With the new line it seems that also the platform changed: the new devices are not anymore based on AMD processors and use instead the Intel Celeron line. The S540 sports a Dual Core J4005.
The case got also a little more slicker and smaller than the previous model.

Expansion:

Flash: a M.2 SATA SSD can be installed in all sizes. Reports on the internet are that also NVMe modules are accepted but they will work only at SATA speed. Attention also on the M.2 Key as the "M" key are a no go. I have installed a Transcend 240GB TS240GMTS420S card which worked without problems. The build allows different sizes of M2 drives: 2230, 2242 or 2280. For the 2242 it seems that is necessary to move the nut that holds the drive into place and for the 2280 it will go back to back with the PICe WLAN card.

IMG20251018183143

RAM: 1 Slot is available for RAM DDR4 and accepts according to specs up to 8GB. I did not had a bigger module to test it out.

IMG20251018183211

PCIe: 1 Slot available that accepts M.2 network cards. I have installed an Intel 8265NGW M2 PCIe WLAN card which functioned without problems.

IMG20251018183430

USB: below the Flash and the PCIe connector there is a USB 3.1 connector. My unit unfortunately did not had it by default. There is a cut on the back panel shaped like a USB-C Port which should be the output for this.
PPoE: above the Flash and PCIe connector there is a connector for a PPoE module. I also did not had it as standard so I cannot say to much about it.
Serial: the S740 has in the corner close to the power supply connection also a Serial Connector. My device had only the slot on the back mask for the serial connector, on the Mobo there is only visible the place where this should be. Below a pic with the S540 and a S740, the Serial Connector is to be seen in the upper left corner of the S740.

Firmware

BIOS

Hit F2 at power-on to get into the BIOS. This describes itself as Aptio Setup Utility and is an American Megatrends and reported 'Version 2.19.1268' and 'Core Version 5.0.0.13'. Selecting System Information took me to another screen where it gave the BIOS Revision as R1.10.0, built 05/10/2019.

Moving on to the Advanced tab which included the intriguing entry Auto BIOS Update. If you enable this option the S540 goes on-line at boot time and checks the specified server (webdownloads.ts.fujitsu.com) to see if there is an updated BIOS available. Manually checking the Fujitsu support site I could see there was V5.0.0.13 - R1.14.0 (08/01/2025) available. When I tried the automatic process it did go on-line but, after maybe 10 seconds, reported "Couldn't get firmware information from update server".

Boot

For a one-off selection you can hit F12 at power-on to get straight into the boot screen menu without having to mess about in the BIOS.

BIOS Update

I have manually updated the BIOS as per the instructions on https://support.ts.fujitsu.com/ and right now I am on R1.14.0 (11/20/2024). Strangely on Fujitsu site this version has a different date: 08/01/2025... Update was done directly on boot with no OS required. The Fujitsu site offers also an update via Windows.

Standard Firmware

The version that I have came with a 8GB Flash Module (could be a custom configuration or a after market install as I have bought it used) and with Linux - elux RP 6.22 preinstalled.

Linux

I didn’t had any problem booting all the distros that I had on my ventoy USB drive including MX-Linux, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint.

Nevertheless I think this is a machine that will shine with ProxMox and LXC containers or with Home Assistant.

The Celeron J4005 is also on the list of supported CPUs for Windows 11 and I also saw it boot pretty decent with Windows 10 but did not wonder further away.

Personal note(s)

(1)

This is a flea market find and I have fell in love with it at the first moment. I think the only drawback in all setup is the dual core CPU, but this does not mean that there is no niche for such a machine. Do to finding a S740 most probably the S540 will leave my collection with the hope that will find a owner where to serve a more practical scope. :-)

In April 2024 I have contacted David Parkinson from https://www.parkytowers.me.uk (this is my "go to" resource/wiki for thin clients) and offer to supply a description for the Fujitsu Futro S540 as on his site there was none. He agreed to it and I would be glad if he will take upon the offer made back then :-)
